Most of these skills can also be applied to many types of professional communication.

3. How to Avoid Plagiarism and Use References

This workshop will not only introduce the basic rules of formatting references and avoiding plagiarism but will also include detailed information on how to integrate references into paragraphs as well as how they should be used in different sections of research articles such as the literature review or discussion. Important differences in using references in various fields will be included such as paraphrasing technical sentences and choosing verbs to summarize the opinions of other authors will be included.

This workshop will provide detailed frameworks and specific skills to more effectively structure the description of data, cover common errors in format and grammar, and introduce principles of describing data for effective empirical research in sciences, engineering, and social sciences across the results and discussion sections of research writing.

5. Computer-assisted Research Writing

This workshop will go into more detail than previous workshops on how free software and internet websites can be used to help choose grammar structures and build vocabulary skills to write journal articles, theses, or dissertations more efficiently. Participants will also learn to fix common difficulties graduate students have in using MS Word for formatting research articles. More specialized concordance software and websites will also be introduced. This workshop will be of interest both to students who just want to write their research in English more efficiently and those who want to develop their writing skills for professional development in the long-term.
