세부내용

The purpose of this 2-part video lecture course is to introduce some basic concepts of Western philosophy and some of its key thinkers by discussing a selection of well-known quotes. Rather than getting lost in lofty, abstract, metaphysical thinking, the idea behind this series is to show that philosophy can be brought down to earth and used to ask meaningful questions and stimulate meaningful thoughts about a topic we are all interested in; our own lives.

Discussions of each quote will be broken into three parts. After presenting the quote, the first section will turn to a brief discussion of the philosopher, including a few biographical details and/or the ideas the philosopher is most famous for. In the second section, we will look at the quote in more detail. This might involve discussion of the context in which the quote was made or just a more detailed examination of what the quote means. The final section will be the longest. In this, we will critically examine the ideas behind the quote and see what these might mean for us in our daily lives.

The second video turns to ethics and is entitled “What should I do?” In this video, we use our quotes to present the three most famous ethical systems, as well as taking a short detour to see if we need God to have morality. The four quotes in this video are:

1. “…it is the greatest happiness of the greatest number that is the measure of right and wrong.” (Jeremy Bentham – Utilitarianism)

2. “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.” (Immanuel Kant – Deontology)

3. “…were mankind’s belief in its immortality to be destroyed… everything would be permitted.” (Fyodor Dostoevsky)

4. “…the good for man is an activity of the soul in accordance with virtue” (Aristotle – Virtue Ethics)
